Once again, I travelled north to Archway to see the Interim Show of the MA Fine Art group at Byam Shaw. Once again, beer for one Pound. The Concourse Gallery, basically the ground floor of the building, provided a big space for the 13 artists. It was a surprisingly coherent and good show with a lot of different media and notions. As this was the third time that I've visited a show there (click here for images from their last show) , it was fantastic to observe the extreme development of each student. Some artists, such as João Rolaça, Lars Bjerre, Victoria Stusiak, Carlos Reyes, Keke Vilabelda and John Patrick Egan have been expanding, re-developing and re-creating previous ideas and forms - whereas Anna Iceland, Thomas Poeser, Raluca Popa, Karen Garratt, Persa Zacharia, Sarah Lüdemann and Jack Thurgar experimented and presented works with new materials, new media, or completely rethought approaches towards their art pieces. Anna's self-humorous and self-confident photos, Victoria's poetic and theatrical paintings, Lars's massive and narrative triptych, or Raluca's elaborate video - just to name a few - impressed me a lot. I have assembled a lot of photos and videos from the show, however, I don't have a video from Jack Thurgar's live performance, because the room was too dark and too crowded. (I might get a hold of another record).

Congrats to all the artists, I think there were very good works in this exhibition and I really want to return and see the exhibition in the end of the year! There are very different approaches and I definitely want to see where most of the works are going..People should keep an eye on this group!
ReplyDeleteAnother thing that really liked was the cosy, familiar environment that I could feel in the building and in the class.
Looking forward for the next exhibition!
